GREAT STUDY! It is worth it. Also, although controversial and complex topics are showcased within the book, the articles are accessible!, great book!, Nicely, this book did not really deliver on its promise, namely to articulate the third way between the Scylla of Cultural Relativism and the Charybdis of the forced universalist morality. Mister. Bricmont makes it perfectly clear he is the universalist, just not a good imperialist one, and he wants a universalist morality that does not lead to wars in its name. Alright, good, I would just like that, too, but once you have a total goal, then you have the justification of any give up for the sake of that goal. This is, naturally , a massive philosophical problem, and not just philosophical. All Bricmont does is show that the particular U. S. has done is pretty much the opposite regarding the lofty ideals the U. S. professes and thereby reveals the U. S. to be a most weakling hypocrite. This really is the type of thing Noam Chomsky has been doing for decades, and it also should shock no one the German Edition (at least) regarding this book has the foreword by none some other than Chomsky himself. But showing the United Says to be a hypocrite does not really invalidate the concept of huminatarian interventionism. Abuse of the idea does not invalidate the idea itself. And so the Enlightenment lives another day to fight more bloody wars all for the sake of human rights.
To say the publication is more or less a re-hash of everything you can find in almost anything the political Chomsky has written in the last fifty years is not really to dismiss the publication, of course. I actually, really like Chomsky, nevertheless Bricmont, I have to say, is the a lot better writer and is able to make the same points that Chomsky can make with greater economy and, consequently , greater force.
But one point that Bricmont does not make with force, great or otherwise, is his suggestion for the third way between relativism and imperial absolutism. Indeed, he does think of a third way but generally seems to realize that it is thus laughable that, like the guilty Straussian, he desires to bury it between the lines. His Third Approach is what I'd just like to call a libertarian Hegelianism. The developed countries developed to the End of History on their own, so allow the some other countries do so at the same time, and, presto, we have got on the one hand upheld a definite telos therefore avoid the trap of cultural relativism and on the some other hand established a principle that lets us get rid of the adjective " imperialist" from absolutism.
It's neat but Hegelianism can not work that way at all. Hegelianism allows development to proceed only if the final regarding History has not recently been reached. See, one are not able to philosophize until one knows the point of history, and one cannot know this particular until history has arrived at its end. Until then every thing must become allowed to happen, just like wars, mass murder, torture, crimes against humanity, etc ., because everything is part of the necessary dialectic of the Unfolding of the Tour's Spirit.
But once the End of History is here, then one immediately understands what once looked loved an account told by a good idiot. One understands the dialectic of history within a truly scientific manner and, therefore, will be able to tell other people who have not arrived at the End of History what to do to get there. Well, if the developed countries of this particular world are truly at History's End, then they are the rightful adults of the world and as such have the right to tell the undeveloped and underdeveloped countries what to do, and instead regarding Humanitarian Intervention, we have Hegelian Intervention (which registrants of Hegel know is simply Napoleonic Conquest that is conscious of itself as Unfolding Spirit), and Mr. Bricmont would still kvetch. And if no country is at History's End, then no one can philosophize, no one can help to make prescriptions because History continues to be an inexplicable tale informed by a babbling idiot. In that case, Mr. Bricmont should just shut up., Recouping from the popular stress of Vietnam has recently been agonizing for the country's imperial managers. Running the global empire requires appropriating opportunity when it arises, as well as strafing the unruly when they threaten to break ranks. But all that received a lot harder once the bloody realities of southeast Asia gave intervention the bad name. Still, there's considerable truth in the older saying, "Where which may, there's a way", and there's definitely a "will" in Washington-- an imperial will. But after Vietnam, the "way" took a while to crystallize. Enter the concept "humanitarian intervention", the phrase bound to participate the heart of each well-meaning liberal. What better reason to intervene in an additional country's internal affairs, compared to to do so under the cover of aiding human being rights. No more need for an Ollie North working covert intervention from the White House basement, or even being thwarted by the restive anti-war Congress. Right now even liberals and anti-globalists can climb on table the interventionist train. And many did, riding to Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, and Korea before the wheels fell off in Baghdad.
Bricmont's succinct little volume is about as timely because timely gets. In the 150-plus pages, we're informed why the US cannot be trusted to conduct any kind of post-WWII intervention, "humantarian" or otherwise. Just as importantly, Bricmont points out how counter-productive these types of intercessions prove in evolving ordinary standards of human being rights. Much of the material here is most likely familiar to students regarding US foreign policy. Continue to, discussing the track document within the context regarding humanitarian assumptions serves the very timely purpose, and really should be required reading for all who would like to climb on-board that meretricious train.
Several miscellaneous points: Situating the left's present predicament continues to be a key requirement of moving beyond our present benighted stage. The Preface provides a provocative pair of 20th-century comparisons as signposts, electronic. g., anti-imperialism, not socialism, characterizes that century's trajectory, thus placing the 3rd World's evolutionary advances in a clearer light. Also assisting the text are the author's well-placed efforts at dealing honestly with the Soviet experience. There's small of the reflex anti-Sovietism that characterizes much regarding current left opinion. Inside fact, it's hard to see how the still left can revive without a good honest eye-level reckoning with 70 years of "socialism under siege". Lastly, the book works with the problem of interventionism within the present era of ALL OF US dominance. It's not a function of theory. There may be scattered references to certain circumstances justjfying foreign intervention, nevertheless Bricmont's not seeking to appear at general criteria. Set succinctly, we have the better concept of what does not justify foreign treatment, than we have regarding what does.
Anyway, Bricmont's is a highly topical function, worth much greater attention than what it's presently getting on this site.
