"How to Create a Mind" is a very interesting publication that presents the routine recognition theory of thoughts (PRTM), which describes the basic algorithm of the neocortex (the region of mental performance responsible for perception, memory, and critical thinking). It is the author's contention that the brain can be reverse engineered because of the energy of its simplicity and such knowledge would allow all of us to produce true artificial cleverness. The one and only, futurist, prize-winning science tecnistions and author Ray Kurzweil takes the reader on a journey of the brain and the future of artificial intelligence. This specific enlightening 352-page book is composed of the next eleven chapters: 1. Believed Experiments on the World, 2. Thought Experiments on Thinking, 3. A Model of the Neocortex: Typically the Pattern Recognition Theory of Mind, 4. The Biological Neocortex, 5. The Old Mind, 6. Transcendent Abilities, several. The Biologically Inspired Electronic digital Neocortex, 8. The Mind as Computer, 9. Thought Tests on the Mind, ten. The Law of Accelerating Returns Applied to the Brain, and 11. Objections.
1. Well researched and well-written book. The author's uncanny ability to make very difficult subjects accessible to the masses.
2. A great topic in the "mind" of a great thinker.
3. Great use of charts and blueprints.
4. A wonderful job of explaining how thinking works.
5. Thought-provoking questions and answers according to a combination of sound research and educated speculation.
6. The ability of recreating brain processes in machines. "There is more parallel between brains and computer systems than may be obvious. " Great stuff!
7. Great information on how memories truly work.
8. Hierarchies of units of features in natural systems.
9. How the neocortex must work. Typically the Pattern Recognition Theory of Mind (PRTM). The main thesis with this book. Typically the importance of redundancy. Plenty of details.
ten. Evolution... it does a brain good. Legos will never be the same for me again.
11. The neocortex as a great metaphor machine. Projects underway to simulate the human brain such as Markram's Azure Brain Project.
12. Speech recognition and Markov models. Author provides a lot of excellent examples.
thirteen. The four key ideas of the universality and feasibility of computation and its applicability to our thinking.
16. A fascinating look at split-brain patients. The "society of mind. " The idea of free will, "We are apparently very eager to clarify and rationalize our actions, even when we didn't actually make the choices that led to them. " Profound with many implications indeed.
15. The concern of identity.
16. The brain's capacity to predict the future. The author's own predictive track record referenced.
17. The laws and regulations of accelerating returns (LOAR), where it applies and why we should educate ourselves to think significantly.
18. Typically the author provides and analyzes objections to his thesis. In defense of his ideas. Going after Allen's "scientist's pessimism. "
19. The evolution of our knowledge.
20. Great notes and links beautifully.
1. Typically the book is uneven. That is, some chapters cover certain matters with level while others experience shortage of depth. Some of it is understandable as it relates to the limitations of whatever we currently know but I feel that the book could have already been reformatted into smaller chapters or subchapters. The publication bogs down a little in the middle sections of the book.
2. Technically I argue with the notion that evolution always results in more complexity. Yes on survival although not always on complexity.
3. The writer has a tendency to cross-market his products a tad much. It may come across as check out me...
4. A bit repetitive.
5. Sometimes simply leaves you with more questions than answers but that might not become a bad thing...
6. Simply no conventional separate bibliography.
In summary, overall I enjoyed this book. Regardless of your general stance on the feasibility of artificial cleverness no one brings it like Ray Kurzweil. His enthusiasm and dedication is admirable. Mcdougal provides his basic thesis of how the brain works and a path to achieve true artificial intelligence and all it implies. Fascinating in parts, bogs down in other sections but in the end satisfying. I highly recommend it!
Further suggestions: " Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Habits " by Leonard Mlodinow, " Typically the Believing Brain: From Ghosts and Gods to Governmental policies and Conspiracies---How We Construct Beliefs and Reinforce All of them as Truths " by Michael Shermer, " The Scientific American Brave New Brain: Just how Neuroscience, Brain-Machine Interfaces, Neuroimaging, Psychopharmacology, Epigenetics, the Internet, and... and Enhancing the continuing future of Psychological Power " by Judith Horstman, " The Blank Slate: Typically the Modern Denial of Human Nature " by Steven Pinker, " Who is in Charge?: Free May and the Science of the Brain " and " Human: The Science Behind What Makes Us Unique ", by Michael S. Gazzaniga, " Hardwired Habits: What Neuroscience Reveals about Morality 1st Edition by Tancredi, Laurence published by Cambridge University Press Book " by Laurence Tancredi, " Braintrust: What Neuroscience Tells All of us about Morality " by Patricia S. Churchland, " The Fantasy of Free Will " by Cris Evatt, " SuperSense " by Bruce Meters. Hood and "The Mind and the Meaning of Life" by Paul Thagard., Very disappointed. The publication is about how precisely the thoughts works, and not AT ALL about " how to create a mind". When you're into the study of the brain, by all means read this book. But We was expecting something very different given the author's work in AI and given the title of the book, which is misleading., Loved the publication. While most people might think Ray is ridiculous and his ideas are just too grand to be ever achieved. We totally agree with him that time should come when we will have enhanced brains.
Which will help us solve some of the most daunting problems of our era also to avoid the destiny that we are all certain to!, Kurzweil presents his usual rational and deductive presentation style, this time to how a mind works.
I was hoping more for the "how to" from a programmers perspective, but it lays a good conceptual foundation for where to start., Very nice intro to the state of the artwork in the understanding of the brain and mainly the neocortex. It's all high level stuff, but informative and entertained.
We don't give 5 superstars because the last two chapters are mainly about philosophical discussions as seen by of the author. And he is not clear about the open questions to really " develop a mind". He just vaguely mention that the primary issues are related to finding a way for a virtual thoughts to learn itself from the feeling without human involvement. Mcdougal assumes that because chip manufacturing technology is soon going to achieve " human level" performance, then somehow, the leftover open questions in software are gonna be clarified pretty soon (or we will be successful copying the brain). Also, the author talks too much about himself, his estimations and theories. Which is fine at certain level, but somewhat to much of himself to myself.
Anyway, very good publication for the price., Now i'm currently a student in university and currently learning Information Technology. This book exposed me up to countless new ideas about the world, and how my future career could possibly evolve. This is a book is well worth buying especially for the price., Because a very long time student of artificial intelligence and practioner and researcher how machines understand natural, human vocabulary I found Ray's publication insightful. Kurzweil is absolutely nothing short of a master in the space. If there were one thing I'd wish he carressed on, it would be how our technology will augment our abilities. Several of the material methods Neuroscience which is difficult to grasp for non medical folks but again this book is like a roadmap for the research being done and technologies being explores., A great deal of thought provoking ideas in an accessible format. Don't expect to get enough detail to sit down and program an AGI system when you're done reading.
