Like an ace reporter the girl can show you why the civil war happened. when it happened and how it was allowed to continue--but she goes one better she tells you the way it affected her very own family and the darkish shadows it still casts., I truly loved this publication. The author has a pleasing style of writing and the breadth of her research was compelling. It is sad/interesting to read about what is absolutely proceeding on inside of Syria, facts that you will never get in a 2 minute news cut. She actually is so knowledgeable of the history of Syria and the Middle East and I was able to complete the considerable gaps inside my understanding of it. In addition to as someone with a grandmother who was almost greater than life, and so dedicated to her family, I am aware her admiration, love and respect for Salma. The greatest surprise to me was that of all of the places other than her family home where she could have resided she chose Beirut! To my way of thinking, influenced by news footage I saw of the conflicts in the Middle East when I was growing up, I think of Beirut as a bombed out ruin. I look forward to read more from this talented writer, A moving and well written account of modern Syria. Syrian-American writer Alia Malek tells the country's story through her family's activities over three decades. Filled with vivid personal portraits, this book helps Syria come alive to the reader. The difficulty of the country, and the resilience of its people, shine through. Malek spent the first years of the current Syrian crisis surviving in Damascus. The lady offers an indelible family portrait of what people have endured, as well as examples of people's ingenuity and small triumphs amidst adversity. The humanity of Syrians is haunting and memorable., I can't recommend this book enough, so much of the story of Syria has recently been told in the traditional western press by non-Syrians. Via this lovely personal and family memoir, I discovered so much about the country's history and current debacle through the intimate stories of Alia's family and web of family friends and neighbors across generations. The details and quirks of Syrian life, cuisine, culture were weaved in seamlessly with harrowing reporting especially as the uprising started out the regime's crackdown became more raw all the time. Alia herself, as an adult woman, Syrian national but one born in the US and who journeyed often, wasn't above hunch as a spy or nefarious foreign agent of some kind -- even from family or family friends - as systematisierter wahn abounded and the indicate chamber of the Syrian state media became ubiquitous. An important book, read it!, This extremely important book about the homeland of Alia Malek's parents, to which she shifted at the start of the revolution, which rapidly escalated into a multi-frontal war, recounts a (hi)story that is at once personal, through Malek’s family and her grandmother’s house in Damascus, and communautaire, documenting a century of political, social, geostrategic and ethnic upheaval which have shaped the tragic fact which Syria is presently experiencing. Your home that was Our Country is simply masterpiece and a must-read for anybody who wishes to comprehend Syria and the Syrians beyond the headlines and media cliches., The story of the Syrian woman who became an American citizen. Her struggles to keep family together and the girl love for the family who are imperfect but wonderful. She cant are now living in Syria, but has such strong emotional ties to the homes, plants and folks of the country., This is a outstanding book on Syrian culture and deserves to be widely read by those considering the country. That said, this guide is not an account of the civil war, with minor exceptions., Alia does an amazing job of weaving together a compelling family-level narrative with the rich, layered history of Syria. A person with any interest in Syria or maybe the Middle East would succeed to read this. Impressively, Alia's book is totally accessible to newcomers but also illuminating to reporters who are familiar with all the nuances of Middle Eastern societies. Extremely, strongly suggested!
