Even though you're not into football this guide is riveting. I actually was fascinated by Bill Walsh's climb from poverty and obscurity. He just did not stop and went with what he loved. Typically the first hand details of his insecurities and his tortured soul.... it all made for fascinating reading. The writing was fantastic. It's a fairly easy read and i also had to keep placing the book down for fear of finishing it all in one day.

That also provides so much insight to the players, how they developed over the years and how he got a less than mediocre team and brought them to fame with splendour, unconventional methods to finding top players and a perfectionist mindset.

The writer also keeps the book interesting with great inside tales of the craziness that goes on with players, owners and the ability of coaching.

I loved the insight and first account details of a brilliant, most difficult, extremely sensitive man who became probably the most brilliant football coaches of our time. Well done!, Among the great coaches of all time as his record shows. But he was also an boss in caring about his players lives as
well as their performance on the field. This is detailed in the book along with his coaching history which I knew very little about.
Nicely written and a great read., Being a long-time 49er fan I understand I feel biased, but this is a very good book that any football fan will relish. I can keep in mind living through these periods and games and had no idea at the time what Bill Walsh was going through. In fact I actually still didn't know many of the things I actually read in this book. I knew about his ruthlessness in getting rid of players at times, the Montana/Young controversy, and of course his "genius. inch I was surprised about his insecurities and wonder if those great teams of his would have won even more if he hadn't been so unconfident. My only complaint is when the author was describing the action in games he never known as the players for the other team and that would have really added to the story., After i was following football a long time in the past, I really didn't like the 49ers. They were too perfect, and I actually viewed Bill Walsh as a cold and calculating coach (too a lot of an intellectual). But reading about him so many years later, I found that he was indeed an exceptional coach and an exceptional man. I am a third grade teacher and I am trying to teach and train my students to become the future leaders of our country. I would like them to have good work ethic, practice the Golden Rule, and live their lives with integrity. I will bring what I am learning about Bill Walsh through reading this book and implement his ways into my classroom to make my students, my team, into champions., I obtained this book because I always found what Walsh do to football strategy interesting. I'm young enough that I grew up in the 1990s, well after Walsh retired from coaching, and for someone as serious as him, there seemed to be a lack of material on him.

This book is far more about Bill Walsh than it is about football, whereas the actual on the field summaries of the games are rather vague, and often gloss over details from in games, Harris does a congrats showing how each game affected Walsh and his players in varying ways. It dives very deeply into the relationships that Walsh had with his family, his players, other coaches, and his owner, Eddie DeBartolo.

One aspect I did not expect was how motivating the book was while explaining how Walsh approached the game. More so than other bios I have read, Walsh's strong work ethic is very evident.

I'm a die hard football fan, but Bill Walsh was such an interesting and complex person, that despite any shortcomings on specialized football detail, I completely enjoyed it and would highly recommend it. In addition, it is just a very quick read., David Harris has written a very nice well balanced biography of Bill Walsh. He provides the episodes, downs, genius and flaws of a man included in one of the most mentally and psychologically demanding professions - NFL Head Coach. We see Bill accomplishing fame/sucess later in life, relative to the typical high perfomer, after age 45. He takes a an organization that was bad during its best years and turns it into a dynasty that lasted through the 80's and most of the 90's. He is credited with creating an offensive scheme that changed the NFL and continues to be used today. Most remarkably he was able to see greatness that broke with conventional wisdom by composing Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, Jerry Rice and Steve Young. All four caused it to be into the Hall of Fame and the initial about three are considered to be the best ever at their position. He finished with 3 Super Dishes and most likely he would have won several more had he not retired after the 1989 Very Bowl win.

But all of the above also caused much pain, stress and personal destruction. He took each loss in person and could not deal with criticism from the media, ownership and from anywhere else as an example. His most critical players such as Montana and Lott expanded to play for him as their coach but appeared to have lost regard during their time collectively. Some of this was due to Bill's overiding philosophy of Team over Individual - even the All Time greats. Within his final years Bill made a goal to go back and mend many of his failed relationships including his along with Montana. It was coming in contact with to read in the final Chapter that Montana was chosen by Bill to make the final conversation at his funeral. Montana closes with "He desired people to know that he loved you"... "So I'm saying now. In addition to in closing, as I say goodbye to my friend and my coach, I actually just want to say, 'We love you too. ' "
